The transformation of a 1970s farmhouse into a vibrant, family-centric home is a testament to the power of thoughtful renovation. Led by Maxwell & Page Architects' designer Jess Garnham, this project showcases a unique approach to preserving a property's original character while infusing it with modern functionality and a playful spirit. The renovation, which began in 2024, was a family affair, with Garnham's sister, Amy, and her husband, Harry, taking center stage in the transformation of their New South Wales Mid North Coast property. The house, originally built by two brothers and later subdivided, had a rich history that the new owners were eager to honor.
One of the key principles guiding the renovation was a commitment to 'no white walls,' reflecting Amy's desire to maintain the home's original aesthetic. This decision was a strategic move to preserve the farmhouse's retro spirit while adding a touch of contemporary flair. The exposed brickwork and internal timber linings were carefully maintained, with Amy and Harry's hands-on approach to sanding and restoring these features adding a layer of authenticity to the space. The bathroom renovation was a standout, with the replacement of country-style wallpaper with Colori Matt tiles from Tiento, creating a playful pink theme in the ensuite. The main bathroom, with its sage green tiles, paid homage to the original finishes and the surrounding bushland, even lowering the windowsill to capture the family's dream view of kangaroos.
The color palette throughout the house was a thoughtful reflection of its history. The kitchen's stainless steel benchtops and blue tiles echoed the previous yellow finishes, creating a cohesive and nostalgic atmosphere. However, the renovation also introduced a playful twist, with the yellow cabinetry adding a pop of color that contrasted with the blue tiles. Garnham noted that the biggest challenge was the delay in materials and finding local tilers with the patience to handle the extensive tile work.
Despite the ongoing updates, the house already exudes a sense of completeness, filled with color, personality, and functionality. The next phase of the project will focus on the original verandah and reconnecting the house to the elevated areas at the rear, further enhancing the property's connection to its natural surroundings.
