But here's where it gets particularly intriguing for Chargers fans: The team has already informed other candidates that they are proceeding with McDaniel. He has also personally communicated to NFL coaches that he's heading west to take on this new role, with a specific mission to coach quarterback Justin Herbert. This is a move that could fundamentally reshape the Chargers' offensive identity.
McDaniel's track record in Miami was nothing short of spectacular in his initial years. From 2022 to 2023, he cultivated one of the league's most dynamic and innovative offenses. During the 2023 season, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who was drafted just one spot after Herbert in 2020, led the entire NFL in passing yards with an impressive 4,624 yards. The Dolphins also boasted a formidable offense, ranking second in scoring and third in expected points added per play, a testament to McDaniel's offensive acumen.
And this is the part most people miss: While McDaniel's offense saw a dip in his final two seasons in Miami, partly due to injuries to Tagovailoa, including a concussion that sidelined him for four games in 2024, his earlier work with Tagovailoa demonstrated a remarkable ability to elevate a quarterback, even one with a perceived limited skill set. The question now becomes: What can McDaniel achieve with Justin Herbert, a quarterback widely considered to possess a virtually limitless athletic talent and skill set?

Harbaugh recently reiterated his desire for a coordinator who prioritizes a "Physical run game. Physical unit that is smart, plays tough, plays physical, very sound, and puts the playmakers in position to make plays, and does that as a unit." McDaniel's offenses have historically performed well in this regard, ranking 11th in EPA per designed rush over his four seasons in Miami, and even higher (third) from 2022-23.
