"We're not beating around the bush here," says Charlie McAvoy, a defenseman for the Boston Bruins. "We're confident in our group and our ability to win gold. Everyone here understands the message and the expectation."
But here's where it gets controversial... Is this the best defensive group Team USA has ever had? Some argue that this group of eight defensemen could be the cream of the crop, the finest to ever don the red, white, and blue.
Let's take a closer look at their impressive resumes:
- Quinn Hughes, the Norris Trophy winner for the 2023-24 season, is a key player for the Minnesota Wild. His partner, Brock Faber, is a rising star in the league.
- Zach Werenski of the Columbus Blue Jackets is second among all NHL defensemen this season with an impressive 62 points. He could be paired with McAvoy, the Bruins' top defenseman.
- Jaccob Slavin, considered by many as the best defensive defenseman in the NHL, plays for the Carolina Hurricanes. Noah Hanifin, with the Vegas Golden Knights, has consistently reached the 35-point mark in multiple seasons.
- Jake Sanderson and Jackson LaCombe, both up-and-coming stars, bring youth and talent to the team. Sanderson is 23, while LaCombe is 25.
And this is the part most people miss... Cale Makar, who will play for Team Canada, won the Norris Trophy last season, but four of the U.S. defensemen on the Olympic roster finished in the top 10 in voting! Werenski came in second, Hughes third, Slavin eighth, and Sanderson 10th.
"It's incredible to see the talent churning out of American defensemen," McAvoy adds. "Look at the NHL, and you'll see U.S. defensemen leading the charge for many teams."
The depth and versatility of this group are what make them so special. While Hughes and Werenski excel offensively, they are also elite defenders. Slavin, on the other hand, is a shutdown machine, allowing his partner to join the attack freely.
"You need a variety of tools in your toolbox," Slavin explains. "In a short tournament like this, you want players who excel in different areas."
And this is where the familiarity factor comes into play. Many of these players have competed together in the past, whether it's through the U.S. National Team Development Program or international tournaments like the 4 Nations Face-Off.
"Familiarity is key," says Faber. "Playing with elite defensemen like these is a seamless transition. Having Quinn [Hughes] as my partner makes it even smoother."
The bonds formed through these shared experiences are invaluable, creating a tight-knit group that understands each other's strengths and weaknesses.
"We got really close during the 4 Nations tournament," Werenski recalls. "And I believe that closeness will be an advantage for us here in Milan."
